The Three Layers of Our Floor Coating Installation Process

Garage floors need to be as strong as possible because they are constantly put under tons of pressure. You drive your car over it, which brings not only heavy mass concentrated over just the four contact points of the tires but also brings with it road salt and other chemicals that are put on winter roads to make them safer. Garages also have high foot traffic and are your base of do-it-yourself renovations and home improvement projects. With all of this traffic and activity in mind, concrete often just isn’t strong enough to stand up to the wear-and-tear that it should. Adding floor coating to your garage not only adds a great finishing texture and appearance that makes your home more sell-able in the long-term, but it increases the durability of the floor to ensure it is strong enough for even the hardest daily use. At PolyTek Surface Coatings, our floor coating installation process includes three layers for long-lasting adhesion and a long-lived flexible coating that can stand up to traffic and weather damage.

What are the three layers of our garage floor coatings installation process?

  • A shot blasted surface level of reconstructed concrete: One of the first steps in our floor coating installation procedure is to abrade the concrete flooring to allow for better gripping and adhesion of the polyurea material. Our process creates an extremely porous surface that allows the flooring coats to hold on tight. And even before our shot blasting process begins, our concrete experts reconstruct your floor from cracks, pits and other damage so the process begins with a level floor. Our shot blasting process quickly abrades the concrete surface and removes dust and contaminants without removing a significant portion of your concrete’s top player. Not only does this standardize the surface of your garage before your floor coating is applied, it ensures that chemicals like oil and grease are stripped away from the topmost layer of concrete so that adhesion is consistent and long-lasting.
  • A pure polyurea basecoat: Polyurea chemicals have a number of characteristics that make them optimal for flooring in high traffic and high wear areas. What makes it valuable as a base coat is that it has two times the adhesion of epoxy floor coatings, which are more common and available as a less permanent DIY chemical. But our experts use polyurea to make sure the coating adheres fully to its concrete base for a long-lasting coating that cannot be easily chipped away or separated.
  • A polyaspartic polyurea topcoat: The topcoat is where all of the other features of polyurea floor coating really shine. Your floor coating will be highly resistant to abrasion due to the chemical density and flexibility. This flexibility is also key for a floor coating material in cold weather areas like Minnesota where the underlying concrete can expand or contract due to rapid freezes and thaws. Polyurea floor coating can also stand up to additional damage besides weather-related expansion and contraction: it is resistance to chemical damage that garage floors often face from road salt and from oil and gas that can leak out of your car or power tools and lawnmower.

All of the layers of PolyTek Surface Coatings’s installation process are formulated and implemented to give you the best and long-lasting floor coating installation. Every step is designed to strengthen the underlying concrete layer, to ensure that your new floor coating is long-lasting, and to install a surface layer that can stand up to whatever you, your car, and your garage can throw at it.
